I have read most of the Stargate SG-1 books available and I find myself re-reading this one over and over. The story is well written and moves along at a good pace. The interaction between the characters of the team is wonderful. There is warmth and humor between the team that rarely shows up in other books. I recommend this book without hesitation to any fan of SG-1.

I have all of the Stargate books that are out there, and have to say without a doubt, this one is my favorite. It is beautifully written and is designed for those fans of sci fi that would love a trip to another planet just to see what's there! (This story carries the reader to about twelve very different Gates.) The characters are perfectly done - exactly as the TV show portrayed them. The plot is simple but has a few interesting twists and turns. As a first book effort this one is really good. This is also the only Stargate book I have re-read several times - just 'cause it's so much fun. Hope the author writes several more SG-1 books.

...Suzanne Wood's novel contains a great story, intricate and involving. The chapters sometimes left me quite breathless. Great balance of action, drama, and, of course, the personal relationships that truly make Stargate SG1 work so well...

Without a doubt, this is one of the best Stargate SG-1 novels that I've read.
It's a structured "quest" story, where SG-1 is inadvertently drawn into a challenge set out by Ra. Under a strict time limit, they must find clues on each world to lead them to the next world . . . and not all of the worlds are uninhabited. Each world has a unique challenge to face, many of which can only be overcome by working together. The whole novel underscores the essence of SG-1, the loyalty and faith they place in each other, and the lengths they'll go to help each other out. It has a fast-paced plot that jumps from one element to another without losing the excitement or going overboard.
The writer does an excellent job of telling the story, showing the team dynamics, and characterizing SG-1. If it is her first novel, it certainly doesn't show!

Astra's favourite lines:
86 "Well", O'Neill said finally. "This is different."
88 A shrug, a nod and an inclining eyebrow were not exactly the ebullient responses he had been hoping for, but Jack was happy to take what he could get.
151 O'Neill danced away, weapon not quite coming up to firing position.
167 He smiled and tried to look harmless and invulnerable at the same time.
173 Teal'c proved he could do that thing with his eyebrows even while laying down...
176 He knew he should go first, fearless leader and all...
186 The collective penny dropped with quite a thud.
198 Sam watched him stand for a moment, working out how to dial up without removing his hands from under his arms.
199 Teal'c's eyebrows disappeared into the hat, perhaps seeking out the promised warmth.
272 ... and brought one sleeping colonel rolling to his knees, weapon aimed and primed even before his vision had cleared.
(don't know, I just love such lines that are on the spot)
And my most favourite line of the whole book for its simple beauty would be:
169 For a brief moment he allowed despair to creep past his defenses.
